A Review of Therapeutic Hypothermia in the Management of Brain Injury

Abstract
Purpose: Brain injury remains a significant cause of morbidity and death in Korea and worldwide. The purpose of this systematic review of the literature was to demonstrate the effect of hypothermia intervention for adult patients with brain injury and to indicate implications for clinical practice.

Methods: A search of the PubMed (National Library of Medicine) and the reference lists of all relevant articles was conducted to identify studies.

Results: Eight study reports were identified for the systemic review. There is strong evidence to suggest that hypothermia therapy is beneficial effect for patients with brain injury. Hypothermia therapy should be conducted 34-35¡ÆC for at least 24 hours.

Conclusion: Therapeutically induced hypothermia improves neurologic outcome in patients with brain injury. Further study must design intervention to enhance long-term effect using a large sample.
